A Survey on the Smoking Behavior of College Women in Taejeon and Chungnam-Do Area


Abstract
This survey is on the smoking behavior of college women and was carried out from Sep. 3, 1990 to Oct. 5, 1990. The survey was made on total 751 college women such as 447 being in 3 universities in Taejeon area and 304 being in 3 universities in Cheonan, Kongju area.
The results are as follows:
1. The rate of college women experienced smoking was 30.9 % among total respondents. The rate of college women smokers in province was 14.8 % and higher then that of smokers in Taejeon area.
2. The majority of smokers (54.5 %) began smoking after entrance into college and 10.0 % of respondents began smoking from elementary school days. And among college women smokers, heavy smoker who smokes above a pack of cigarettes was 3.6 %.
3. In degree of knowledge for effect of smoking on pregnancy and infant, most of respondents (31.3 %) answered that they might give birth to premature baby.
4. 67.3 % of college women smokers responded that they felt harm in health after smoking and most of them (40.0 %) were troubled with respiratory disease.
5. Among college women smokers, 39.8 % of them answered that they would keep smoking after marriage and it was revealed with anxiety that rest of them would keep smoking, too.
